The Piedmont lakes are often compared to Lake Como, and their countryside is likened to Tuscany, but that’s doing a disservice. With a rich royal history, a continental European feel, and a world-class food and wine culture, Piemonte Italy is in a place all its own. With each passing year, more of our food-loving travel clients are traveling to Piedmont, and we’re here for it.

The region’s hotel scene spans from rustic inns and modern boutiques to historic 5-star resorts. The best places have a distinct sense of place and are as key to getting to know Piedmont as are your activities.

At Salt & Wind Travel, we’ve extensively explored the Piedmont region. We’ve personally toured and stayed in many of these properties and planned bespoke trips for our clients around others. As a travel planner specializing in luxury travel to Italy, the hotels we’re sharing are based on firsthand experience and feedback from our travelers. Here, we share nine luxury hotels, from the modern Nordelaia and the serene Casa Fantini, to the grand dame hotel on the shores of Lake Maggiore, the Grand Hotel des Îles Borromées.

9 Best Luxury Hotels In Piedmont, Italy

While Turin offers charming 4-star boutique stays, the real showstoppers are found in the countryside, where Piedmontese and Milanese locals often retreat for weekend getaways.

These nine luxury hotels in Piedmont are located in areas that our clients visit most frequently, namely the wine regions of Langhe, Roero, and Monferrato, as well as two of Italy’s most beautiful lakes: Lake Orta and Lake Maggiore.

Langhe, Roero, and Monferrato Hotels

Wine is produced across Piedmont, but the Langhe, Roero, and Monferrato areas are the epicenter. This part of the Piedmont countryside is renowned for its production of Barolo wine, white truffles, and UNESCO-listed vineyards. They’re also relatively central, so they allow you to explore the farms and wineries as well as lovely towns like Bra, Alba, Barolo, and Castiglione Falletto.

Casa di Langa (Langhe)

Location: Cerretto Langhe
What We Love: One of the newer hotels in the Langhe region, Casa di Langa sets the standard for eco-luxury with its sleek, sustainable design. The rooms are spacious with large private terraces, and the decor has an understated elegance that puts the spotlight on the views.

Our clients stay here if they are wine enthusiasts who want to access the high-end wineries of the Langhe. The on-site Fàula restaurant champions 0 km (also known as hyper-local) foods and flavors. Plus, there’s access to top-notch cooking classes and a lovely spa.
Need to Know: Driving is essential for exploring beyond the hotel.

Dining room interior of Castello di Guarene Hotel

Castello di Guarene (Langhe)

Location: Guarene
What We Love: Set in an 18th-century castle built by an aristocrat, this hotel feels like stepping back in time. However, the meticulous restoration also means it has all the essential modern conveniences.

There are only 12 rooms and suites, yet each one features ornate interior decor and offers views of the castle’s extravagant gardens, as well as the Piedmontese hills or the distant Alps. Since such a small fraction of the property is rooms, the rest of the castle feels like a living museum, making it a unique experience.

Guests rave about the world-class spa, the pool with a view, the onsite restaurant, and the wine cellar, which houses a deep collection of local wines. Its location, northeast of Alba, provides access to that town as well as some of the region’s gems, such as Barbaresco and the tiny village of Neive.

Need to Know: The style leans traditional, so it’s best for travelers who appreciate historic charm.

Perks When You Book With Us:

Relais San Maurizio (Langhe)

Location: Santo Stefano Belbo
What We Love: A 17th-century monastery-turned-serene-retreat, Relais San Maurizio, is set on a hill surrounded by vineyards and a 400-year-old park with botanical gardens. The elegant rooms strike a balance between classic design elements and modern conveniences.

This 5-star hotel is a peaceful oasis with much to enjoy, including a Michelin-starred on-site restaurant, a lovely terrace, clay tennis court, seasonal outdoor swimming pool, and an indoor pool. The award-winning spa is among the best in Italy and features Thalassotherapy, a wine hammam, a salt cave, and their line of products. Wine lovers are drawn to their legendary wine cellar, which holds over 20,000 bottles.

Need to Know: Some rooms have a classic style—we recommend specific suites if you prefer a modern feel. Driving is essential for exploring beyond the hotel.

Aerial View of Nordelaia Hotel

Nordelaia (Monferrato)

Location: Cremolino, Monferrato Region
What We Love: This hotel, located in an 800-year-old farmhouse, has been transformed into a contemporary design hotel with panoramic countryside views. Along with Casa di Langa, it is one of the newer hotels in the area, but it has quickly garnered a following.

Each room is unique, blending history and modern style. Though it’s one of the smaller hotels on our list, it still has a lot to offer. Guests love the restaurants, particularly the fine dining experience at L’Orto, which features produce from the on-site vegetable garden. They also enjoy the infinity-edge pool and the spa, which includes a Turkish bath.
Need to Know: The location is at the eastern edge of the region, so it’s not as central to the main red wine areas as the other hotels listed here.

However, it is located near the famed Gavi wine-growing region. And its location opens up exploration of different areas, such as Genoa or southern Piedmont.
Perks When You Book With Us:

  • Upgrade to the next room category, based on availability at check-in
  • Guaranteed 1 pm late check-out
  • A welcome treat in the room on arrival

Lago Maggiore Hotels

Lake Maggiore is one of our favorites of the northern Italian lakes thanks to its blend of history, stunning architecture, and natural beauty. The main town is Stresa, and the area is famous for the nearby Borromean Islands, private beaches, and grand luxury hotels, all set against stunning scenery.

Grand Hotel des Iles Borromées

What We Love: One of the best hotels for classic Italian luxury, this grand Art Nouveau property dates back to 1863. The sprawling hotel is located in the heart of Stresa town, set in a historic park with stunning gardens and lake views. There are amenities galore, including spacious rooms with lake views, pools, beautiful landscaping, and a fabulous hotel restaurant. It’s said Ernest Hemingway wrote parts of “Farewell to Arms” while staying at this property, so you know it has serious pedigree.

Lake Orta Hotels

Though less known than other Northern Italian lakes, Piedmont’s Lake Orta is very much worth exploring. It’s small but beautiful, peaceful, and features the picturesque San Giulio Island, home to a stunning Benedictine monastery.
