Salt & Wind Travel

Cookie Policy

Effective date: November 6, 2026
Last updated: November 2026

This Cookie Policy explains how Salt & Wind Travel LLC (“Salt & Wind,” “we,” “us”) and our partners use cookies and similar technologies on saltandwind.com and travel.saltandwind.com (our “sites”). It is part of our Privacy Policy at https://saltandwind.com/privacy-policy/, which explains what we do with the information these technologies collect and the rights you have. The email sign-up and landing pages that our email provider hosts for us are covered by our Privacy Policy, and our email provider may set its own cookies there. This policy is a notice about our practices. It is not a contract. Our Terms of Service are separate.

1. What cookies and similar technologies are

A cookie is a small text file a website stores in your browser. It usually holds an identifier that is sent back to the site, or to the company that set it, on later visits. Session cookies end when you close your browser; persistent cookies stay until they expire or you delete them. First-party cookies are set by the site you are visiting. Third-party cookies are set by another company, such as an advertising partner.

We and our partners also use similar technologies, which this policy calls cookies too:

  • Local storage, an area of your browser where a site can keep identifiers and settings;
  • Pixels and scripts, small pieces of code that send information about your visit to us or a partner;
  • Device and browser information that a partner may read to recognize your browser.

2. The kinds of cookies we use

This policy sorts the cookies on our sites into four categories, and every cookie on our sites belongs to one of them. On travel.saltandwind.com you can choose by category; on saltandwind.com one choice covers analytics and advertising (section 3).

CategoryWhat it doesDo we ask first?
Strictly necessaryMakes the sites work and keeps them secure, runs a form you choose to fill in, and remembers your privacy choicesNo. These are always on
FunctionalRemembers your preferences and supports features such as search, recommendations, and saved favoritesNo. Slickstream, which provides these features on saltandwind.com, loads on every visit, before you choose (section 4)
AnalyticsTells us how people use the sites, such as which pages are popular and which content leads people to ask us to plan a trip, so we can improve the sites and our servicesYes, before they run, except our email provider’s form statistics on pages with a sign-up form (section 4), which run before you choose
AdvertisingLets Raptive and its partners show ads on saltandwind.com based on your interests, cap how often you see an ad, and measure results. Includes identity providers that link your browser to identifiers they hold elsewhere, including any identity storage set when you sign in to favorites or submit a sign-up formIn California, yes: no advertising cookie is set until you accept. Elsewhere in the United States, non-personalized ads run before you choose, after you decline, and under GPC, with the advertising cookies section 4 describes and cookies set by the companies whose ads appear and the tags those ads carry (below)

There are no advertising cookies on travel.saltandwind.com.

Advertising before you choose (saltandwind.com only). Raptive’s own script, which shows our privacy pop-up, loads on every page of saltandwind.com before you make any choice, in California and elsewhere in the United States, whether or not your browser sends GPC, and it sends Raptive the address of the page you are reading. If you are in California, our privacy pop-up asks you to accept before you continue to the site, and until you accept, no request to Raptive’s advertising partners (Google Ad Manager, The Trade Desk, Comscore, Prebid, and identity partners) loads and no advertising or identity cookie is set. If you are elsewhere in the United States, until you agree to advertising cookies, or if you decline, or if your browser sends GPC and you have not since chosen to allow advertising in our privacy pop-up or settings (section 3), saltandwind.com shows only non-personalized ads, chosen from the page you are reading rather than from a profile of you. Serving them sends your IP address, the approximate location derived from it, your browser and device information, and the address of the page you are viewing to Raptive’s ad server, Google Ad Manager, and other companies Raptive works with, such as Yahoo and The Trade Desk, with privacy signals telling recipients not to profile you or target ads across sites, to deliver and count the ads and prevent fraud. Raptive may show visitors outside the United States a different privacy pop-up with its own choices.

The requests can also reach the ad exchanges that bid for the ad space. No hashed email is used before you agree, but these companies may read or set advertising cookies and identifiers, including Google’s, Yahoo’s, The Trade Desk’s, and Raptive’s own (section 4). The Trade Desk also runs an identifier sync that sets its advertising identifier before you choose. An ad can also carry tags from the advertiser and the measurement and identity companies it uses, which receive your IP address and browser information and may set their own cookies; in our tests these included LiveRamp, Tapad, and ID5. Because we do not have service-provider contracts with every recipient, we treat these requests as a possible sale of personal information. Declining in our privacy pop-up and the “Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information” link stop personalized advertising and identity matching that uses your email address. Neither stops the non-personalized ad requests themselves, the tags those ads carry, or The Trade Desk’s identifier sync. GPC stops that sync until you accept, though the tags an ad carries may still set their own cookies.

3. Your choices

Our privacy banner appears on your first visit to saltandwind.com and to travel.saltandwind.com. Until you choose, no analytics other than our email provider’s form statistics, and no personalized advertising or identity technology that uses your email address, runs. Some things do run before you choose: strictly necessary cookies (section 4), including Google reCAPTCHA on our trip inquiry page; on both sites, Google Tag Manager, which loads our analytics only after you agree; and on saltandwind.com, Raptive’s script, which shows our privacy pop-up and sends Raptive the address of each page you read (section 2), our email provider’s sign-up form, which records that the form was shown, Slickstream, which loads on every visit before you choose, and the author photo on our posts, which your browser loads from Gravatar, a service of Automattic. If you are elsewhere in the United States, the non-personalized ads described in section 2 also run, with the cookies and ad tags section 2 describes. If you are in California, no advertising cookie is set until you accept. On saltandwind.com, one choice in our privacy pop-up covers analytics and advertising. Elsewhere in the United States it offers Accept or Decline; in California it offers only Accept, which you need to click to continue to the site. On travel.saltandwind.com, you can accept all, reject all, or choose by category. Strictly necessary cookies cannot be turned off on either site.

Your choice is per site. A choice you make on one site does not apply to the other, except that a few first-party analytics cookies, including our first-touch attribution cookie, are set on saltandwind.com and can be read on both sites (see “Cookies shared across our two sites” in section 4).

The notice inside our inquiry form. On travel.saltandwind.com, the trip inquiry form from Typeform shows its own notice. That notice is a second, form-specific point where you decide whether Typeform’s own analytics and marketing cookies run, in addition to our privacy banner.

Changing your choice. On travel.saltandwind.com, “Your Privacy Choices,” the link with the opt-out icon at the bottom of every page, reopens our privacy settings, where you can accept or decline each category except strictly necessary cookies. On saltandwind.com, after you accept, one click on the “Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information” link at the bottom of every page opts you out of personalized advertising and of the sale or sharing of your personal information for it; the non-personalized ad requests described in section 2 continue. Elsewhere in the United States the link also reopens our privacy pop-up so you can change your choice. After you decline, the same link reads “Customize my ad experience.” and reopens the pop-up. On travel.saltandwind.com, and on saltandwind.com elsewhere in the United States, you can change or withdraw your choice at any time. In California, saltandwind.com’s pop-up does not offer Decline: after you accept, you can opt out of personalized advertising and the sale or sharing for it with the footer link or GPC, and you can stop Google Analytics with Google’s browser add-on (Privacy Policy section 9) or by blocking cookies in your browser settings (below). When you withdraw your choice, the technologies that needed it stop from then on, except that the non-personalized ads described in section 2 and their cookies continue (in California, once you have accepted). Cookies already set, including those our advertising partners set on their own domains, can stay in your browser until they expire or you delete them in your browser settings (below).

Opting out by email. You can also ask us to opt you out of the sale or sharing of your personal information by email. We apply email requests as soon as we can and within the time the law requires. How to send one is in Privacy Policy section 9.

Global Privacy Control. If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal, we treat it as a request to opt out of the sale and sharing of your personal information and of targeted advertising. travel.saltandwind.com sets no advertising cookies. On saltandwind.com, our advertising partner’s privacy pop-up applies the signal differently by region. In California, GPC stays in force whatever you choose in the pop-up: if you accept while GPC is on, or turn GPC on after accepting, the pop-up keeps passing your opt-out to advertising partners. We do not control how each partner responds, and after you accept, some advertising and identity companies may still receive requests and set identifiers, such as The Trade Desk’s advertising identifier (section 4). Elsewhere in the United States, GPC applies until you accept: ads are requested as non-personalized, although the tags an ad carries may still set their own cookies (section 2). If you accept while GPC is on, or accepted before you turned GPC on, personalized advertising runs; to opt out after accepting, click the “Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information” link. While the signal applies, Raptive’s pop-up passes it to advertising partners in industry privacy signals that tell them not to sell or share your information or use it for targeted advertising. See https://globalprivacycontrol.org.

Your browser settings also let you block or delete cookies. Blocking all cookies can stop some parts of the sites from working. Help pages for common browsers:

Industry opt-outs. You can also opt out of interest-based advertising from many companies at https://optout.aboutads.info and https://optout.networkadvertising.org. These tools work per browser.

4. Cookies on our sites

The tables below list the companies we know set cookies and similar technologies on our sites, what they do, and when they run. Advertising partners change over time, and the companies whose cookies appear can differ by visit and by your choices, so the tables are not exhaustive; Raptive decides which advertising companies take part in each ad auction, so there is no fixed list. Privacy Policy section 5 describes them by kind, names the ones seen in our tests, and links to Raptive’s advertising privacy statement. Your browser settings let you block or delete cookies (section 3); on travel.saltandwind.com, our privacy settings also show the current, scanned list.

Cookies shared across our two sites

A few first-party analytics cookies, including our first-touch attribution cookie, are set on the domain saltandwind.com and can be read on both of our sites. This lets us understand, for example, whether a reader of a travel guide later asked us to plan a trip. These cookies are set only after you allow analytics cookies on the site that sets them, and they are never used for advertising. A choice you make on one site does not apply to the other, so once set, these cookies can be read on both: for example, first-touch details stored on saltandwind.com may be attached to a trip inquiry you send on travel.saltandwind.com, even if you declined analytics there.

5. Changes

We may update this Cookie Policy, for example when the cookies on our sites change. When we do, we post the new version here and change the “Last updated” date above. Privacy Policy section 18 explains when we tell people about a change before it takes effect.
