Tell us if you relate: your to-do list is never-ending, you incessantly scroll through Insta to see who has posted lately, and the news alerts won’t stop. It’s time for a digital detox like the one we did recently at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar.
We shared the whys and hows when we did a digital detox in Thailand over the summer. And now we’re trying to schedule one every quarter. Because let’s be honest, there’s only so much that meditation app helps before you want to scream your pretty head off.
That’s why we’ll start sharing our picks for hotel properties begging for you to detox, beginning with the Fairmont Grand Del Mar.
Tucked back from the beach in Los Peñasquitos Canyon, the Fairmont Grand Del Mar doesn’t always have the best cell service, and we say embrace it to the fullest.
How To Do A Weekend Digital Detox At The Fairmont Grand del Mar
Here’s how to have a perfect 48-hour weekend at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar, and we promise you not miss your cell phone for one second:
FRIDAY
AFTERNOON HIKE
We’re pretty sure there’s some law of nature that says nothing makes you feel like you’re unwinding faster than getting out and moving around. California has some fantastic hikes, and the Fairmont Grand Del Mar area is high on that list with a range of trails. Don’t worry. None of the walks are too vigorous so that you can get out there long enough for a good view, but you won’t stress yourself out.
SUNSET DRINKS
Head to the Lobby Lounge terrace for a sunset drink and try one of the property’s signature cocktails. The Pomegranate Paloma – a tart, not-too-sweet twist on the classic grapefruit-tequila cocktail — is our pick.
FANCY MEAL
As food lovers, we’re convinced a digital detox is ten times easier when it is chockfull of activities we love. And, when at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar, a meal at Addison is a major must. Easily one of the best high-end dining experiences in San Diego, Addison is a meal that will keep your attention from start to finish.
SATURDAY
MORNING HORSEBACK RIDING
Arrange a horseback riding session in advance to get out and see more of the massive property. While there are no horses on the property, the concierge team can arrange a ride at the nearby stables. I’m an early riser, so I’d opt for a morning ride; that way, you can get in an unlimited ride before it gets too hot. If horses aren’t your thing, book some time on the tennis courts or squeeze in a round of golf.
SPA RITUAL
After a busy morning, you’ll want to pamper yourself a bit. So, no matter what you do, make sure you leave plenty of time to enjoy the spa — one of only 27 Five-Star spas in the country. The spa facilities are tranquility, and you can order food to stay and relax all day. As for treatments, the signature Renaissance (with a floating bed, a mud wrap, and a rosemary-infused shower) is our pick!
BEACH TIME
Though the property is tucked back from the water in a tranquil canyon, you can still get quality beach time. The property provides a Grand Beach Service, which includes a shuttle, beach equipment, and some snacks, so you’ll be all set for an afternoon at the beach. Just a heads up that reservations are required for the Grand Beach Service, so be sure to book ahead.
SUNDAY
BREAKFAST IN BED
If you ask us, it’s not a weekend away until we’ve had breakfast in bed. There’s something about reading the paper and eating a croissant under the covers that’s the ultimate relaxation!
POOL PARTY
Because Sundays are a day of rest, you should chill out if you ask us. Preferably poolside. If you’re traveling without kids, you can head to the adult pool, where neither cell phones nor children are permitted. That means it’s so quiet you’ll fall asleep without realizing it!
SUNDAY TEA
Don’t leave without first having the property’s high tea service, especially if you’re traveling with family or girlfriends, since it instantly transports you! The tiers of sweets are only available at the high tea service, so be sure to book in advance!
How To Get To The Fairmont Grand Del Mar
Because we prefer to stay put for a weekend like this, we say nix the car and instead hop the train. If you’re in Southern California, the Amtrak Surfliner takes barely 2 hours from Los Angeles to Solana Beach. It’s a short ride (the hotel can provide ground transportation on request) to the property.
