Today we celebrate Noni (aka my grandmother). Because it’s her birthday, and she just told me that now, at 92, she’ll finally start admitting her real age.
To toast her, I’ve concocted this Whiskey Chocolate Chunk Coffee Milkshake recipe because it combines all of her favorite indulgences — chocolate, whisky, and coffee — each of which she has daily and which she claims are secrets to longevity. She’s seriously worthy of toasting, not just because Noni is the only grandparent I have left but because she’s an amazing creature. Never one to be seen without her Ferragamo flats, black trousers, and Chanel No 5, she’s as classic as they come.
She’s arguably the best cook in our family, and her gnocchi skills are her culinary proof that she’s 100% Italian. That said, I likely should’ve made her a homemade cake or something more elaborate. But I owe her this Chocolate Irish Coffee Milkshake — it’s my duty because I never really apologized for when I was 6 and toppled a whole chocolate chip milkshake in the back of her brand-new Buick.
Regardless, we’ll put a candle in it and likely have it after lunch because midday spiked milkshakes are allowed when you’re 92. Noni told me so.
Whiskey Chocolate Chunk Coffee Milkshake Recipe
- 4 ounces dark chocolate (about 60%),
- 6 scoops coffee ice cream
- 2 tablespoons milk
- 1 ounce Irish whisky
- Using a peeler, shave or peel off the edge of the chocolate bar to make some shavings for garnish, then finely chop the rest. Combine ice cream, milk, and whisky in a blender and process until just smooth. Stir in the chopped chocolate and serve garnished with the chocolate curls.
