I had the pleasure of living in San Francisco for almost a decade and I was a weekend warrior, spending almost every weekend exploring Marin County and beyond. These were some of my favorites on all of my San Francisco day trips. I loved them for the time in nature, good eats, and easy trips down the Pacific Coast Highway.Ā
5 Places to Go on A Bay Area Day TripĀ
Whether you’re a wine lover, an outdoors enthusiast, or simply looking for a relaxing day out, there’s something for everyone. Just a stone’s throw away is Napa Valley’s world-renowned wineries, Mount Tamalpais’ towering redwoods, and Half Moon Bay’s charming coastal town. These destinations offer a unique experience in the Northern California region and a chance to break away from that 9-5 life in the city.
So, consider one of these five destinations next time you want a quick Bay Area day trip:
Helpful Travel Tip for Bay Area Day Trips
A quick tip before we go any further: the earlier you can get out on the road, the better. Bay Area traffic on the weekend picks up by 10 AM for traffic headed out of San Francisco and the nearby areas. Departing by 9 AM makes a difference and can reduce drive time.
For the wine-lover: Napa Valley
Known for its world-renowned wineries, Napa Valley is the ultimate destination for a wine-filled Bay Area day trip. The valley is a great place to relax and unwind with beautiful scenery, delicious food and wine, and plenty of outdoor activities. Napa Valley is home to over 400 wineries and vineyards, and it’s the spot to learn about the process of winemaking and go wine tasting. Few wineries accept last-minute walk-ins, so you’ll want to save this list below:
- Artesa Winery (Carneros area)
- Gamling & McDuck Tasting Room (Napa)
- Clif Family Winery (St. Helena)
- V. Sattui (St. Helena)
After your wine, head to quaint towns like Yountville or St. Helena for a stroll. The downtown area of St. Helena has high-end shops, a few restaurants, and cafes. And as you drive the scenic Highway 29, you’ll pass through Oakville ā keep an eye out for Oakville Grocery. This is where to grab an artisanal sandwich and other gourmet groceries.
If you want to extend your time in wine country, another option would be to spend the day in Sonoma County. It’s another one of the best day trips in the region, and you could make a full day of it exploring everything from coastal redwoods to the historic Sonoma Plaza.Ā
For the laidback adventurer: Half Moon Bay
This picturesque coastal town is just a short drive south of San Francisco. Half Moon Bay is a relaxed day with its long sandy beaches, rugged coastline, and charming local shops and restaurants. Visitors can walk along the beach, tide-pool at Fitzgerald Marine Reserve, or visit the famous Mavericks surf break.
You’ll want to start your day trip here at Moonside Bakery and Cafe to get your coffee and pastries. For those wanting an easy-going coastal stroll, the Half Moon Bay Coastal Trail that begins at Half Moon Bay State Beach is where to walk.
No day trip to Half Moon Bay is complete with one last pitstop āĀ Samās Chowder HouseĀ for the famous lobster rolls. Get it with butter or aioli, or one of each. It’s a beautiful restaurant in Half Moon Bay that accepts walk-ins seven days a week.

For the adventurous hiker: Mount Tamalpais State Park
If you’re looking for a nature escape, Mount Tamalpais is just over the Golden Gate Bridge and is the destination for more strenuous hiking trails. This beautiful state park is home to old-growth redwood trees and coastal views ā the perfect place to hike, picnic, and enjoy the stunning scenery.
Unlike the famous Muir Woods National Monument just down the road, the best part is that no reservations are needed to visit. The park has miles ofĀ trailsĀ you can hike, including the Dipsea Trail and the Steep Ravine Trail, which takes you through the heart of the coastal redwood forest in the Marin Headlands and offers spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean. This is one of those day trips you’ll want to pack your lunch and plan to be in the rolling hills for some time.
Stinson Beach is a great spot to end the day if you want to continue the adventure after a morning hike. It’s just over the hill, another 15 minutes. By the afternoon, the parking lot tends to empty out, so you should be able to grab a parking spot. And soft-serve ice cream from Parkside Cafe is never a bad idea after a long hike.
For the surfer: Santa Cruz
Santa Cruz is a classic California beach town with a laid-back vibe and plenty of things to see and do. Stroll along the beach, visit the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, or hike in the Santa Cruz Mountains redwood forests. But this is where you want to go for those who want to surf.
Iconic surf breaks like Steamer Lane and Pleasure Point draw in thousands of surfers yearly. It’s a great spot to watch the locals even if you’re not in the water. After time out in the ocean, Verve Coffee Roasters is the choice coffee shop for getting warm.
For the foodie and adventure lover: Point Reyes National Seashore and Area
Point Reyes National Seashore is a beautiful, secluded national park located north of San Francisco. With a wild coastline, pristine beaches, and abundant wildlife, Point Reyes is the ultimate escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. You can hike to the lighthouse, watch for native Tule elk, or enjoy the spectacular views.
But what makes Point Reyes so unique is its proximity to incredible food, done really, really well. Think of some of the best oysters, local cheese, and baked goods. You could even have yourĀ day trip from San Francisco be an oyster crawl; that is how many fantastic spots there are to choose from.
Follow the local “Cheese Trail,” grab fresh seafood at one of the many fish shacks like The Marshall Store, and enjoy time out in nature. You’ll see hikers traverse the Bear Valley and then pop into Due West Tavern at the Olema House for an incredible dinner. The region blends the best of all worlds here ā nature and its local ingredients.
