Photos From The Quaintest Lake Town In Italy: Lake Garda's Sirmione

Sometimes things are really great surprises like making a flight connection when it seems mathmatically impossible or getting upgraded in your hotel room. Or finding a town that doesn't show up on Google Maps but is totally worth the stop — like Sirmione.

On my last trip to Verona, it was just pouring rain so my mother and I got in the car and just started driving. Ever the travel nerd, my mother had read her whole guidebook on Lake Garda and thought the walled-in city of Sirmione would be worth a stop. And, on this point, mom totally knew best. The town was quaint, if a bit too overrun with German tourists, but totally worth a stop if you're in the area.

And, while we wandered the town, we stumbled upon the Michelin-starred restaurant, La Rucola. It was a haven with impeccable service and some of the more creative food – Frico Parmigiano popsicles, Szechuan Pink Peppercorn Carbonara Pasta, and Almond Milk and Uni Pasta, to name a few – of our whole trip. But enough talk, here are some of the photos of this little gem of a town.
