Miami, Florida: Where To Go In The Wynwood Arts District

Just south of the Miami Design District is the diamond-in-the-rough art hub of Wynwood, a rapidly growing area that's home to more than 70 art galleries, boutiques, and museums. With the influx of warehouses-turned-galleries and an eclectic mix of bars and lounges, Wynwood is quickly becoming the hottest destination for art-and-bar crawls in Miami—and a don’t-miss stop during Art Basel.

Located just North of downtown and only a 15-minute drive from the Miami Airport, the epicenter of Wynwood is found between NW 26th Street to NW 24th Street bordered by NW 2nd Avenue and NW 5th Avenue. But feel free to wander a few blocks in any direction to discover every inch of the diverse community and growing art scene.

Here are the places you shouldn't miss:

GRAB A BITE

Wynwood Kitchen & Bar
Conveniently located right next to Wynwood Walls, Wynwood Kitchen & Bar is a must, from the visually eclectic decor to the delicious Latin-influenced cuisine. Try the Fingerling Chorizo Hash, Ropa Vieja Empanadas, and the Vaca Frita.

Joey's Italian Cafe
Joey's is the hip choice for thin-crust pies and more Italian favorites in contemporary digs near the local art galleries. It claims to serve up the best pizza in Miami and we won't argue with that!

GET A DRINK

Cafeina
If you find yourself thirsty, hungry, but still looking for art, the sultry and exotic vibe of Cafeina is the perfect spot. Order an artisanal cocktail and the Wagu beef sliders at the downstairs bar or then head upstairs to Mezzanine, a 1920's inspired speakeasy. But don't leave without visiting the gallery, which features a rotating collection of photography, drawings, installations, and paintings.

Wood Tavern
Directly across the street from Wynwood Kitchen & Bar on NW 2nd Ave. is Wood Tavern, the most comfortable and welcoming watering hole in town. Locals come for the diverse menu of specialty beers and well-crafted cocktails that rotate frequently. Order a drink, find a seat at one of the patio picnic tables, and make a new friend.

CAFFEINATE

Panther Coffee
Any cafe that utilizes a 1920's roaster to expertly heat small batches of beans is worth a visit. The ultra-strong roast coupled with the incredible latte art absolutely lives up to the Panther hype.

SEE SOME ART

Wynwood Walls
The city's only outdoor street art park features world-renowned artists—such as Jeff Soto, Futura, and Roa—displayed across six buildings. The best time to visit is during Art Basel, which happens December 4 to 7 this year. Also, if you happen to find yourself in Wynwood on the second Saturday of the month, many local galleries open their doors for a public "Art Walk" that is not to be missed.

GAB studio
Wander into GAB Studio for a taste of the emerging artists and photographers in the South Florida area. Owner and photographer Bridges Aderhold opened the gallery on NW 26th St. in 2009 in an effort to support the talented locals.
The Robert Fontaine Gallery
With a diverse mix of contemporary emerging, mid-career, and master artists, The Robert Fontaine Gallery is an approachable and engaging place for art seekers. Check out the monthly rotation of solo exhibitions.

GO SHOPPING

Elemental
After filling up on caffeine at Panther Coffee across the street, wander into Elemental for a collection of strange and often-humorous design finds for the home and work space.

The French Atmosphere
Specializing in unique home and design products with a focus on the best brands of France, Germany, and Italy, this is one you won't want to miss.

Plant The Future
Pay a visit to the most unique boutique in town—part greenhouse, part gallery, part whimsical eco-wonderland, part shoppable living home goods. Plant The Future’s artist, Paloma Teppa, blurs the lines between art, home décor, and landscaping in a space centrally located on NW 2nd Ave.

FrangiPani
The perfect place to find unique gifts such as vintage jewelry, personalized stationary, and custom-painted bicycle helmets is Frangipani on NW 2nd Ave.

Haus Fashion Lab
Filled with funky finds and upscale vintage goods, Haus Fashion Lab blends emerging designers with big names in fashion. You’ll find a variety of vintage goods, bathing suits from Uruguay, and eco-bags from Mexico.

DETOURS
We’ve narrowed the district down to a doable walk, but Wynwood has lots to offer. If you’ve got the time, here are a few great detours.

Gramps
Trendy hangout serving cocktails and craft beer amid live entertainment ranging from bands to comics. A great place to meet a friend for a quick drink or stay for some late-night fun.

Jimmy’z Kitchen
The appeal of this order-at-the counter grill is both the bright industrial interior and the slow-cooked flavorful cuisine. Try the addictive bolitas de queso (fried cheese appetizer) washed down with boutique wines by the bottle. The friendly and casual ambiance keeps the locals coming back for more.

The Butcher Shop Beer Garden & Grill
Merging retail, restaurant, and beer garden into one experience, The Butcher Shop is one of the coolest spots in Wynwood. Choose from the best quality meats like Certified Prime Black Angus, hormone-free chicken, and store-made smoked sausages to cook at home, or stay for lunch or dinner and pair it with one of the craft beers on tap.
