Who doesn't like to do a little shopping while on the road?! Over the past couple of years our souvenirs have looked less like tourist tchotchkes and more like shopping bags filled with home decor treasures from local shops. Small independently owned business are popping up more and more these days and we’ve picked out a few of favorites from a handful of getaway destination around the country.

GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN
We all know that Detroit is having it’s comeback moment — but did you know that across the mitten state, not too far off of Lake Michigan, there is quite the bustling design scene? Small boutiques packed with local talent, hands-on workshops, and a robust creative energy that is contagious. Grand Rapids is home to design legends such as Herman Miller, so there’s no wonder that the growing small business scene is on point.
This beachside escape often gets a bad rap, thought of only being filled with beer and bros. Surprisingly enough, the boroughs surrounding downtown are thriving with excellent design shops all boasting that perfectly chill california modern flair. Whether you’re looking for one-of-a-kind ceramics, a do-it-yourself terrarium bar, or some fab gifts for friends, San Diego’s ready to shine it’s stylish sun on you!
This city isn’t just for jazz and oversized street legal drinks! NOLA has some pretty fine shopping too. An interesting mix of eclectic, vintage, and modern, the goodies in this town are just as unique as the people who live here. A perfect getaway to stock up on gifts, or if you’re looking to add a bold pop of color and pattern back home. Oh and beignets. Grab a few of those too.
There is an effortless charm in Portland that extends fashionably into its home stores. A bit rugged, a lot modern homesteader — Portland is a city that embraces nature and the beauty inspired by it. There hasn’t been a time we’ve crossed city limits without at least snagging a quirky wooden spoon, handsome wool blanket, or woodsy candle to enjoy back home.
Brooklyn is blowing up more than ever and it’s becoming a little more difficult to keep on top of the latest store openings. Brass salt wells, poppy textiles, and ceramics with an edge. It doesn't matter if you need to trek across the country or just across the bridge, these shops will have you making extra room in your duffel.
